For those individuals, particularly women, who have grown up illiterate, craft skills such as embroidery are a good means of earning an income. In families where there is no father present, the mother is the breadwinner so getting enough money to feed her family is an everyday battle. Younger women especially, are at high risk of being trafficked into prostitution as a means of earning enough money to eat. Vision Rescue saw the need to start a vocational skills training programme where women from all walks of life can come and learn how to paint, embroider, make cushions and jewellery all within a safe and supportive environment. This type of training is now going on in three different slum areas and has led to a few women finding employment in shops and some have started their own businesses from their homes, manufacturing goods and distributing them to different shops. To purchase any of the products these women make, please see our ‘How you can help’ section. Help us and Vision Rescue to keep empowering these women to earn a living and raise their families with confidence.
